Topline

Singer Shawn Mendes announced Wednesday he is canceling the remainder of his North American, UK and European “Wonder” tour because he “wasn’t totally prepared for the toll that being back on the road would take on me,” weeks after he postponed several shows “to take care of myself and my mental health.”

Key Facts

In a statement, Mendes, 23, said he has to put his “health as my first priority.”

The singer said after consulting with his team and working with a “group of health professionals,” it has “become clear” he needs to take time off.

Mendes said he will make new music while taking the break.

Mendes had over 30 shows planned nationally from July to October, and over 50 shows scheduled in Europe in June to August of next year.

Crucial Quote

“I know you all have been waiting so long to see these shows, and it breaks my heart to tell you this but I will be back as soon as I’ve taken the right time to heal,” Mendes said.

Key Background

On July 8, Mendes canceled three weeks of shows. “I’ve been touring since I was 15 and to be honest it’s always been difficult to be on the road away from friends and family,” he wrote. After taking a few years off from touring because of the pandemic, Mendes thought he would be able to pick it up again, but the pressure “has caught up to me and I’ve hit a breaking point.” In April, Mendes posted a note to Twitter opening up about his struggles. “In current form is a 23 year old who constantly feels like he’s either flying or drowning,” Mendes said. “I feel like if people know and see the truth they might think less of me.” In March, Mendes released the single “When You’re Gone.”

Big Number

$87 million. That’s how much Mendes’ 2019 tour grossed, Forbes previously reported. That contributed to his $54.5 million earnings that year, landing him at No. 39 on Forbes’ list of the World’s Highest Paid Celebrities.

Tangent

Justin Bieber recently resumed touring after taking a break to focus on his health as well postponing his tour after being diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, which caused him partial facial paralysis.
