Have you seen the new Chris Rock ad for BetMGM yet? Launched in October 2023, it features the popular actor in a range of different scenarios. All with the same line: “We’re BetMGM and we know how to put on a show.”

Simple and harmless enough, right? Actually, no, as it turns out. So much so that several complaints were made, and the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) had no choice but to step in with the Chris Rock ad.

If you’re a fan of Chris Rock’s you might know that he has widespread appeal amongst viewers of all ages.

And this is the concern that has the ASA’s attention. Would having such a famous and family-friendly actor (such as Chris Rock) as a gambling ambassador unwittingly encourage underage play?

While it’s true that Chris Rock has acted in voice roles for animated movies such as Madagascar and Bee Movie, to name a few. He’s mostly known for his stand-up comedy and film work. Both of which, as you’ll no doubt already know. Often include exclusively adult themes. Nothing that would appeal to children or teens under the age of 18. So no worries there.

This is exactly what the ASA ruled.

Which is exactly what the ASA ruled, particularly when BetMGM pointed out that only the smallest percentage of Chris Rock’s social media followers were minors. And that their ad’s adult themes and Las Vegas references wouldn’t be appealing to them either.

The ASA subsequently agreed with BetMGM’s reasoning and found that the ad was compliant with advertising codes and standards. And it is currently on air. So if you haven’t seen it yet, now’s your chance.

What this incident demonstrates, regardless of the outcome, is that there are many organizations out there which ensure the responsible promotion of gambling. And keeping the industry accountable for its commitment to best practices. That’s exactly the kind of behaviour we like to see, and it’s what keeps gambling safe for all of us.
