It seems almost insane to think about. But it’s the truth. The world record for the most expensive pair of earrings ever sold at auction goes to the Apollo and Artemis pear-shaped diamonds. And they don’t even match!

That’s right. Rather than being an identical set, these two earrings are completely different in colour. With one being blue and the other pink. Named Apollo and Artemis respectively. The two earrings sold to the same anonymous buyer at a Sotheby’s auction in 2017. With Apollo going under the hammer for over $42 million, and Artemis for $15 million.

Listed as the “largest internally flawless fancy vivid blue diamond ever to be offered at auction,” and weighing in at an incredible 14.45 carats. Apollo was graded as an 11b diamond. Making it into an elite category exclusive to just 1% of diamonds across the globe. Not to be outdone, Artemis’s 16 carats were graded as being 11a. A category reserved for only “the most chemically pure” in the world.

What would we do with $57.4 million? We don’t know if we’d blow it all in one go on a pair of earrings. But jewellery would definitely be somewhere on the list. Now just to win that online casino jackpot first…

2. Boehmer et Bassenge Earrings – $17.5 million
If you don’t have over $57 million in your bank account right now (honestly, who does). You might be interested in a pair of more affordable earrings. And we’re using the word “affordable” here loosely. As $17.5 million isn’t exactly small change. Although it is $40 million less than the Apollo and Artemis earrings, so it’s a start.

3. Golconda Diamond Earrings – $9.3 million
Ever heard of the Golconda mines in India before? Home to diamonds of exceptional clarity. The Golconda mines are famed for their precious jewels. And in particular, those that make up the Golconda Diamond Earrings. Crafted from clear diamonds. Each one weighing an amazing 23 carats. The earrings are set in platinum and cut in an unusual antique design. With bell-shaped single-cut links. Also purchased by an anonymous buyer in 2011. The Golconda Diamond Earrings were sold as part of a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong. And fetched the spectacular price of $9 million. We’re not sure if a bodyguard was included, but with the earrings being so costly, one might have to be.

4. Harry Winston Earrings – $8.5 million
If you know jewellery, you know Harry Winston, either by name, by reputation, or by his title as the King of Diamonds. One of the world’s most exclusive luxury jewellers. The Harry Winston name is still as synonymous with diamonds today as it was when Winston began his jewellery empire back in 1926. Which is why it’s no surprise that a pair of Harry Winston earrings could be worth a dazzling $8.5 million.
