Are you sure you’re gambling online for fun

10 min read

We know you love gambling online, so here’s a question for you. When’s the last time you stopped to think about WHY you’re logging on to play?

Maybe you want to play a few games, try a new slot, entertain yourself, or just enjoyably pass the time. And that’s great. Gambling is a great way to spend your leisure time when you approach it as a fun activity and stay within your preset limits.

But maybe (just maybe) it’s not entirely fun for you anymore? Maybe it’s something you do as part of a routine now – automatically reach for your device when you have free time so you can log on and play. Perhaps it’s not just entertainment anymore. Or a way to escape boredom and stress; something you have to do rather than something you want to do.

That’s why it’s good to check in with yourself occasionally to identify your motivation behind your online gambling. If it’s completely for fun, then go ahead and place your bets. But if there’s something else behind it. Then that needs to be examined and dealt with.

Think about why you’re logging on for online gambling

Let’s start with the question we asked right at the beginning. And go from there. Why exactly are you logging on?

Often there’s no single reason why. Everyone gambles online for different purposes. Maybe one day you’re excited about a new release and can’t wait to try it out. Perhaps you have an unexpected block of free time and need something to fill it. Or maybe you simply want to spin the reels for the sheer love of the game.

All straightforward entertainment reasons. All perfectly valid and healthy.

But what about the other reasons someone might log on? As in, they’ve had a terrible day and they just want to escape from it. Or they lost money in the casino yesterday and want to win it back. Or because they’ve played every night for the past week and now it feels weird not to log on and play.

If you’re honest with yourself and any of these reasons (or similar) sound familiar, that’s worth paying attention to. Not that there’s anything to worry about just yet, but it might be worth pausing to ask if gambling is still playing the same role in your life as it always has been. Or if it’s starting to transform into a less positive influence.

Don’t use gambling as a way to make money

Unless you’re a professional gambler, but that’s a whole other thing. If you’re just a normal, regular online gambler, being at the casino needs to be about entertainment first and foremost. Not about making money or winning money back.

This should go without saying, but we want to make it very clear. Gambling is not, and should never be, a way for you to supplement your income.

Gambling shouldn’t be your world

Why? Because casinos have a house edge built in. A mathematical advantage that ensures they win over the long term. Casinos aren’t charities – they need to make a profit to keep their doors open. This means that in order for them to stay in business, they need to come out on top. That’s literally why the phrase ‘the house always wins’ exists.

Now, that doesn’t mean that you can’t win, of course. Casino games are all about luck and randomness. And there are plenty of opportunities for you to win, provided you choose the right type of game and the stars align in your favour (so to speak). But it’s worth noting that there’s no guarantee that you’ll win. Don’t rely on gambling as a secondary source of income. Or as a way to make a few extra bucks.

That’s why we always reiterate that your gambling budget needs to come from the money that you’ve already set aside for entertainment. And that you need to be comfortable with losing it in its entirety (worst-case scenario).

So if you ever find yourself using money that you’ve set aside for other purposes, or logging on to try and win some money, that’s when you need to take a step back and reassess your motives. Ditto for trying to win your money back. What’s more likely to happen is that you end up losing even more than you did originally. Digging yourself into an even bigger hole.

Which is why often your best bet is simply to not log on at all.

Don’t use your gambling as an escape

We all have bad days. That’s life, unfortunately. And when things don’t go your way, it’s normal to want to switch off, disengage your brain and find something to distract yourself. Everything else has gone wrong, and you just need something to go right, please!

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, the best way to shake off a bad day is by doing something you enjoy and turning a negative into a positive.

However, if your automatic coping mechanism is gambling every time something goes wrong. That’s a tendency you’ll need to pay attention to.

If you’re consistently turning to the casino whenever you’re stressed, lonely, angry or upset, it might be worth finding a few other ways to decompress as well. Go for a walk. Watch something you enjoy. Call a friend. Exercise. Read a book. Cook something. Start a new hobby. Do absolutely nothing for half an hour if that’s what you need.

The point isn’t that you should never gamble when you’re having a bad day. It’s about making sure the casino isn’t the first place you go every time you have to deal with difficult emotions. By finding different ways to cope and take your mind off things, you’ll have more choice and be a more balanced person, which is always a good thing.

Check in with yourself before you play

And by that, we mean doing a quick assessment of your mood before you log on to your casino.

Ask yourself questions like:

  • Am I in the mood to play?
  • Am I playing because I want to be entertained?
  • Have I already decided how much I’m prepared to spend ahead of time?
  • Am I feeling stressed, angry or upset?
  • Am I trying to win back any money I’ve lost?
  • Would I be just as happy doing something else right now, or do I NEED to be gambling?

There are no right or wrong answers here. Just make sure you’re being honest about your intentions and motivations.

If you’re feeling relaxed and looking forward to gambling, then go right ahead. But if there’s any desperation in wanting to play, or any anxiety about winning money back. We suggest finding something else to do instead.

Taking negative emotions into the casino is never a good thing, either for your mental or your financial health. Rather, take a break and find something else to do, then come back when you’re in a more positive frame of mind.

Make sure your gambling doesn’t become automatic

Having a routine can be a positive, constructive influence in your life. You wake up, exercise, work, eat, connect, sleep, all at certain times throughout the day. And having a routine in place can be calming and productive.

But while a routine is great for everyday life, it’s not necessarily the best thing for your gambling. If your gambling falls into your daily routine, you run the risk of logging on and playing simply because that’s what you always do. And there’s a difference between choosing to play and playing out of habit.

If you find yourself logging in almost automatically whenever you have nothing else planned, consider occasionally breaking that pattern. Watch TV, phone a friend, go for a walk, take a bath. Anything that gets you away from the casino and doing something that has nothing to do with gambling.

You want to make sure that when you gamble, you’re having fun. And a break in your routine could help reignite that spark you might be missing.

Permit yourself to walk away

One of the best ways to keep your gambling fun and light is by recognizing that you don’t always HAVE to play. There’s no need to squeeze every last drop of entertainment out of every opportunity.

Because the casino is where excitement never sleeps, and there’s always another reel to spin, another hand to play, another tournament to join. You won’t be missing out by not playing. Instead, you’ll be taking a healthy approach to your gambling and your financial management.

So whenever you go to the casino, think about the kind of experience you’re having. If it’s fun and you’re having a great time, that’s perfect. But if you’re not enjoying yourself, if you’re bored or if you’ve reached the spending limit you’ve set for yourself, then just stop.

You have free will, and this is an excellent use of it. Especially as taking regular breaks from the casino can help you maintain some perspective and allow you to keep track of how much time and money you’re spending gambling. Know when to walk away. It’s one of the most useful mindsets for gamblers to develop.

Make sure your gambling stays within your entertainment budget

Want to ensure your gambling stays the fun activity it is? A casino budget can help!

Think about the money you normally spend on other kinds of entertainment. From streaming services to restaurants, books, concerts, crafting or other hobbies, everything you enjoy spending time and money on comes out of your dedicated monthly entertainment budget. And your gambling should be treated in the same way.

Since your gambling budget is money that you’ve specifically set aside for the casino, you need to be firm with yourself. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. There’s no increasing it because of a bad losing session. And no dipping into money allocated for responsibilities like bills, groceries or utilities.

Stick to your boundaries, make sure there’s a clear separation between your gambling money and your other expenses, and you won’t run the risk of playing with fear, anxiety or any other kind of negative emotion. Gambling is just for fun, and it’s staying that way.

Remember that there’s no need to chase the excitement

Casinos are places where there’s always something new and exciting happening. From fresh new games to promotions, tournaments, bonuses, perks and more. It seems that every time you log on, there’s something different to claim or take part in.

Which can make keeping up with everything a little stressful. And expensive too.

So here’s a question. What if you simply… didn’t? What if you released the pressure of having to immerse yourself in everything, and just let yourself breathe? Because while you might think that you need to keep playing to find the next big win or enjoy the next exciting game, the truth is that you don’t.

It’s completely possible to log on and play your old favourites. Or just to pop in for five minutes rather than 60. Or to look at a bonus and decide, “I can’t actually afford that this month”.

Chasing every new experience isn’t what makes gambling fun. Playing in a way that’s relaxed and positive does. Which is why you should be doing that instead.

So, are you still playing for fun?

Ultimately, it’s not about deciding whether gambling is good or bad. Gambling just is. Rather, it’s about being honest with yourself about the role it plays in your life.

If you’re playing because you enjoy it, you’ve set yourself a sensible budget, you’re comfortable with the possibility of losing it, and you know you can happily walk away once you’ve finished, that’s pure entertainment right there.

But if you’re playing because you need to win, you’re trying to chase your losses, or you’re using gambling to cope with difficult emotions, that’s when it’s time to take a step back and reconsider.

Because when gambling is one of the many things you enjoy rather than the one single thing you depend on. That’s when it stays the fun activity that it should be. And that’s when you’ll get the absolute most out of it. Good luck!
