Casino FOMO – feel like you’re missing out?

13 min read

Ever logged onto your online casino and feel like you’ve JUST missed out on something? FOMO? Maybe there’s a promotion you forgot to sign up for that’s about to end. Or a casino bonus you didn’t claim in time. Or (horror of horrors) a massive jackpot that’s just been won on a game you literally play all the time.

AGH! FOMO!

Which, in case you didn’t know, is the fear of missing out. And it’s a real thing, both in life and in the casino too. That annoyed feeling you get when the opportunity to experience something amazing comes and goes. And that if you were a bit quicker or a bit more alert, you could have gotten in on it in time. So it’s essentially being irritated with yourself for letting something fantastic slip through your fingers. Ugh.

This feeling is amplified even more in a casino context, simply because there’s so much going on all the time. From new games releases to promotions, bonuses, tournaments, jackpot opportunities and more, it’s almost impossible to be on top of everything simultaneously. You’re employed and you have a life. You don’t have time to be all up in your casino’s business 247. So it makes sense that now and then you’d miss out on something. It doesn’t make the feeling of FOMO any less annoying though.

So, how do you deal with the FOMO?

Firstly, by recognizing and acknowledging that you simply can’t take advantage of every single gambling opportunity that comes your way. You just don’t have the time or money.

And secondly, by learning how to identify your FOMO and control it before you go on some wild wagering and spending spree. Which is why we’re here to help. And save you and your bankroll from any FOMO-induced impulsive decisions. Here we go!

  1. What exactly is casino FOMO?

That nagging feeling you have that something stupendous is taking place at your casino without you? That’s FOMO.

  • Maybe your favourite slot has just paid out a huge jackpot. So you think you need to start playing it right away
  • Maybe there’s a tournament with a massive prize pool, so you think you should be entering and playing
  • Maybe there’s an email in your inbox telling you about a fantastic new bonus that you think you should now be claiming
  • Or maybe your casino has just added new slots and table games to its portfolio so you think you should be trying them all out NOW

So far, none of this is actually a problem yet. It’s good to know what’s happening in your casino so you can make a choice as to what you’d like to do. Plus it keeps the whole experience varied and interesting.

Where it starts becoming a problem is when your mindset goes from “Oh cool, this looks fun” to “OMG I have to start playing NOW or I’ll miss out!!”

See how different those two approaches are? That’s what differentiates a positive response from a problematic one. We’ll get into what to do about it later. For now though, we just want to make you aware that there are two ways to deal with FOMO. And only one of them is productive.

  1. Remember that somebody else’s win isn’t your loss

It’s a strange feeling you get when you see that someone’s won a huge jackpot prize, particularly if it’s at your casino. You’re excited because it means that a massive win is possible. But it’s also a little bittersweet because you feel as if you’ve missed out at the same time.

Spoiler alert: you haven’t.

Just because some other player landed a 50,000x win on a certain slot doesn’t necessarily mean that you’d have hit that same jackpot if you’d been playing the same game at the same time. Moreover, there are plenty of winnings to go around. The jackpot’s been won once, and it’ll be won again. Maybe next time by you.

Also remember that you’re seeing the outcome of one lucky spin. You’re not seeing all the losing spins that came before it, and you’re not seeing the same player’s previous sessions that ended without a win in sight. You’re just seeing the highlight reel, and while yes, it’s an unbelievable highlight. It’s still just one moment. A moment that could very well happen to you too.

So don’t let someone else’s success diminish your hopes for your own. There’s no need to feel FOMO about another player’s jackpot win. Instead, use that energy to motivate you to find your own!

  1. Don’t let a promotion make your decisions for you

“Hurry to enter!”

“It’s your last chance!”

“Don’t miss out!”

Casino promotions are all about creating urgency and grabbing as much of your attention as possible. And putting a countdown on a promotion is an easy way to kill two birds with one casino chip (ha ha).

But don’t let fancy marketing speak influence your decisions one way or the other. There’s no need to change your plans just because of advertising. Be strong!

If you weren’t planning on entering a certain promo for whatever reason, stick to your guns.

Ask yourself if you’re truly not interested in taking part. Or if you’re just falling for the pressure that the promotion’s marketing is creating. If it’s the second one, you know to stay away.

The same goes for bonuses. It’s not financially responsible to claim literally every bonus that comes your way, so you need to be discerning about those that you do go for. If there’s one that fits your budget and the way you play, then that’s great. But if there’s one that’s creating a lot of noise and causing a lot of FOMO. But has unrealistic wagering requirements attached, then rather let it slide. That’s sound bankroll management right there.

  1. New doesn’t automatically mean better

There’s something so appealing about finding a brand-new casino game to play. Never-seen-before graphics, an innovative new theme, exciting features and mechanics… what’s not to love?

Actually, one small teeny tiny thing. That it’s completely impossible to play every single new game that’s released (unless you give up your day job, which we are 1000% NOT recommending!). Online game providers are prolific in their ability to design and create new casino games. This means fresh new titles are being released to casinos almost daily. And because you simply can’t try out every one of them, the FOMO is real.

But is it though? Do you actually need to feel some kind of way about not being able to play? What if you were able to simply feel satisfied about the games you currently enjoy? If you already love the casino experience you’re having, why try to fix what’s not broken? There’s no need to suddenly abandon your tried-and-tested faves just because something new enters the scene.

So don’t put pressure on yourself to try out each and every new game your online casino releases. Understand that it’s not just impossible to play them all; it’s not practical either. Yes, if you feel like trying something new or adding a different game to your current roster, by all means have a look at the most recent releases. But don’t make yourself feel bad that you can’t try them all – that’s FOMO at work, and it’s neither constructive nor helpful.

  1. Set your budget before FOMO kicks in

We always talk about how important having a casino budget is for responsible gambling (and it is). But what about how important it is in the context of FOMO as well?

Think about it. If you’ve decided in advance how much you’re going to deposit and wager, and how long you’re going to play for, all your budgeting decisions have already been made for you. You’ve set your limits and you’re sticking to them. This means a ton of brownie points for you!

And, more importantly, it also means that the odd moment of FOMO becomes so much easier to handle as well.

Let’s say you come across a jackpot game, a tournament or a promotion you hadn’t planned on entering, but that now looks super tempting to you. Instead of thinking, “OMG I need to find more money for this!”, you think to yourself, “There’s no space in my budget for this.” And you move on with your bankroll intact.

Congratulations, you’ve just reached peak budgeting and self-control! And you’ve remembered that money management isn’t there to spoil your fun. It’s there to give you the freedom to play with complete peace of mind. Which is exactly what you’ve achieved.

  1. Don’t chase a jackpot just because it’s getting bigger

If there’s any game that’s the biggest casino FOMO culprit, it’s the progressive jackpot. You see a jackpot climbing sky-high into the multi-millions, so obviously you start thinking you need to get involved. That jackpot’s going to be won soon, and you’d hate if it went to anybody else but you.

Here’s the thing though. Just because the size of the payout is steadily increasing doesn’t mean that it’s ‘due’ to be won any time soon. And it doesn’t mean that you’re the player who’s going to win it either.

In fact, what you DO need to remember is that to win the biggest progressive jackpot amount available on a particular game, you need to place the max wager. Which, in some cases, can be prohibitively high. Or at least more than your bankroll can handle right now.

Of course, progressive jackpot games are hugely entertaining and thrilling too, but if they’re not within your budget, then stay away. Sometimes not giving in to FOMO is the best kind of casino win you can have.

  1. Give yourself permission to miss out

Here’s a thought that might not have crossed your mind before: what’s the big deal about missing out?

So you didn’t play that new slot, enter that new tournament. Take part in that new promo. So what?

Nothing happened to you; you didn’t lose any money, you didn’t get kicked out of the casino. There was literally no downside. So what’s the big deal?

This is the thought that you need to sit with and embrace. That it’s OK to miss out. No one can play every new release, enter every tournament, claim every bonus. And no one would want to either. Keeping up with all the newness in a casino is literally a full-time job. One that would take all the fun and spontaneity out of your gambling at the same time.

Rather, think about it this way. There will always be another game, another tournament, another jackpot. Don’t give in to the FOMO by thinking that you’ve missed out on an opportunity. Instead, you’ve decided that this particular opportunity wasn’t for you. Way to turn the FOMO on its head!

  1. Take a break from the casino world

If the FOMO is starting to take over, though, the best way to take a step back from it is to take a break from the casino altogether. After all, you can’t miss what you’ve never had, right?

So remove yourself from the situation entirely, and clear your head of negative, frustrating thoughts. If your inbox is full of casino promotions, turn off your marketing notifications. If you’re constantly scrolling through social media posts about huge wins, unfollow those accounts.

You’ll be surprised by how quickly the urgency disappears when you’re not being reminded about it every few hours. Plus, it’ll free up space in your life for other things.

Go out for dinner. Watch a movie. Meet up with your friends. Go outside. Get back into a hobby you’ve neglected. Spend a weekend doing absolutely anything that doesn’t involve reels, cards or Roulette wheels. Distance makes the heart grow fonder in relationships, and it could be just what you need with your casino relationship too.

  1. Come back because you WANT to

Ok, you’ve taken your casino break. Now what?

Well, if you’re excited about getting back into the swing of things and genuinely looking forward to playing again, that’s great! Now you’ll be returning because you want to, not because you’ve convinced yourself that you’re missing out on anything.

In fact, you might even find that you approach your first session back differently. Instead of desperately wanting to try every new game you’ve seen advertised because you’re terrified of missing something amazing. You can choose to play the games that actually appeal to you.

And if you come back and realize that you’re not particularly interested in playing anymore? That’s fine too!

Sometimes we outgrow things, sometimes we just don’t find the same value in them anymore, and sometimes we just get bored with a particular hobby or pastime. And that’s completely normal. Take a longer break or stay away altogether if you prefer. You need to do what’s right for you.

  1. Remember that there’s more to entertainment than online gambling

This might be the most important point of all, so keep it top of mind.

Online gambling is a great way to spend your time, but it’s not the only kind of entertainment out there. And if you’re finding yourself in the casino more often than not. It’s time you took a break for a bit, because it shouldn’t be the place where all your excitement comes from.

Why? Because the more varied your life outside the casino, the less power FOMO tends to have over you.

Think about it this way. If you’ve got plans with friends, a hobby you’re enjoying, a holiday you’re looking forward to, a new series you’re watching or simply a Sunday afternoon you’ve planned around something you love, missing a casino promotion suddenly doesn’t seem quite so dramatic.

And that’s a good thing.

Because you have a full, rich and interesting life, and online gambling is just one small part of that. So you can’t be missing out. Because you’ve got so much else going on.

There will always be another jackpot, another new release, another tournament and another promotion waiting for you to enter. That’s just the nature of online gaming. The important thing to remember is that you don’t have to take part in all of them.

Instead, make your own decisions about when, where and how you play. Set a budget, choose games that genuinely appeal to you and don’t let someone else’s big win convince you that you need to chase one of your own.

Most importantly, remember that missing out on something isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Because more often than not, logging out of the casino and getting on with the rest of your life is exactly what you need to be doing. And when you do decide to come back and log on again, you’ll be doing it because you’re ready for some entertainment – not because a flashing banner or an urgent email told you that you were running out of time. And that’s when FOMO turns to JOMO – the joy of missing out on one thing so you can take advantage of something else. Enjoy!
