Understandably, you’d want to make an impact on the Blackjack table your first time round, but just remember that you’re still learning. In life you have to walk before you can run, and in Blackjack you have to bet small before you can upgrade to betting (and winning) big. 

Why? Because smaller bets allow you to:

• Get comfortable with the pace of the game first
• Learn how Blackjack hands are played and how the order of the game works
• Watch what the dealer does when it’s their turn
• Build confidence without putting unnecessary pressure on yourself

Or in this case, sticking with what you’ve got. It’s a delicate balance and one that some players can struggle with when first starting. 

Don’t worry though, we’re going to cut through all the complications to give you the simplest guidelines possible: 

1. Stand on strong hands like 17 or higher: Once your hand totals 17 or more, it’s usually a good idea to stand rather than risk taking another card. That’s because there’s a very real chance that your next card will push your total over 21, causing you to bust and lose the hand automatically. Of course, there are exceptions to every rule, but when you’re just starting, it’s better to stand on hands of 17 or more, just to be safe.

2. Hit when your total is low and unlikely to go over 21: If your cards add up to a low total, such as 11 or 12, taking another card is usually your safest bet. In fact, if your initial hand has a total of 11 or less, it’s actually impossible to go over 21 with just one additional card. So make sure you take at least one before you choose to stand.

And that single face-up card can give you valuable clues about the potential strength of their hand. For example, if the dealer is showing a 2 through 6, they’re more likely to bust because they have to keep drawing cards, according to the rules. Alternatively, if they’re showing a 7, 8, 9, 10 or Ace, there’s a better chance they’ll finish with a strong hand, so you may need to play a little more aggressively to keep up. While these rules can differ between casinos, in most Blackjack games dealers are required to:

• Hit on lower total: If the dealer’s cards add up to a low total, they must keep drawing additional cards until they reach the minimum total set by the casino’s rules. There’s no option of choosing to stand early, which means they could bust if the cards aren’t in their favour

Spread them out

• Stand on 17 or higher: Once the dealer reaches at least 17, they’ll usually be required to stand and stop taking cards. It’s here where some house rules differ, so you’ll need to pay attention. Some casinos require the dealer to hit on a ‘soft 17’ (a hand containing an Ace counted as 11), and some allow them to continue playing. If they have to stand on soft 17, it’s slightly better for you, and if they can continue taking cards, it’s slightly better for the house. • Follow the same procedure every hand: Unlike players, dealers aren’t able to make strategic decisions or rely on instinct. Instead, they have to follow the casino’s fixed rules the same way every hand, regardless of whether they agree with them or not. 5. Don’t chase 21 every hand – your best Blackjack Tip

Surely that’s the whole point though? Isn’t that literally the aim of the game? To get 21 so that you win? 

Well yes, in theory. But in practice, making 21 your ultimate goal every time will only end up in you busting your hand and losing to the house. Which is a less-than-desirable outcome. 

In fact, it’s possible to win with hands of 18, 19 or 20, or sometimes even 16, if you’re lucky and the dealer busts. Remember what we said right at the beginning – that the aim of the game is just to beat the dealer’s hand? That’s still true, and that’s what needs to be your focus. 

So don’t go into every game with blinders, aiming futilely for 21 or nothing. It’s completely possible to beat the dealer with a lower card hand total, and that’s what you need to be focusing on. It’s not about perfection – it’s about getting the job done the best way you can. 

6. Learn what your options are

We’ve already covered the two most basic options: hit and stand. But sooner or later you’ll come across other alternatives that you’ll need to choose between, such as:

• Double Down: In this scenario, you’ll have the option of doubling your original bet after receiving your first two cards in exchange for drawing just one more card. This is typically the option that you’d take when you feel you have a strong chance of improving your hand with just one more card.
• Split: If your first two cards are the same value (such as two 8s or two Aces), you can split them into two separate hands by placing an additional bet equal to your original wager. You’ll then play both hands simultaneously and independently, effectively doubling your winning opportunities. 
• Insurance: If the dealer’s face-up card is an Ace, you’ll be offered the option of insurance. A side bet that’ll pay out if the dealer has Blackjack. While this might sound like a good safety net, rather stay away. It’s not a favourable bet, and you’ll just end up losing money in the long run.  

Too much information? Don’t feel overwhelmed. There’s no need to master all of these immediately. For now, all you need to know is that these options exist. Sit down to a game, and you might find the other players offering advice and telling you what you’re doing wrong (in their opinion). They might also indulge in competitive banter or try to put you off your game with various remarks and comments. 

Don’t fall for this, and don’t take what others say as the truth. Remember that these are your competitors, and they only have their own best interests at heart. Focus on your own game, make your own mistakes and bask in your own successes. You can listen politely if you want.
